Create Nano Server image with Nano Server Image Builder

Hi guys,

This is my last blog post for this year Smiješak s namigivanjem. So, I’ll describe, mostly in pictures, how to create Nano Server image using Nano Server Image Builder. This is straightforward installation/image creation but we need to be careful with few things, (BOLD).

For this “action” we need three tools, the first is Windows Server 2016 .iso image, the second is Nano Server Image Builder and the last one is Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit.

Install Windows ADK, (you need to install only this roles, Deployment Tools and Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) and  Nano Server Image Builder on your PC and extract Windows Server 2016 .iso image in a folder. I did it on C:\\Server2016.

image

We are ready for the next step. Run Nano Server Image Builder and choose Create a new Nano Server image.

image

Click on Next

image

On the next screen we need to select Windows Server media source.

We read and agreed, of course Smiješak

image

On the next screen we need to choose deployment type. I have chosen Virtual Machine Image and place where I want to save .vhdx.

image

Follow the wizard.

image

Here we need to choose Nano Server editions, Standard or Datacenter. Please read carefully differences between editions.

image
image

Please be patient, edition and package loading can take some time to complete!

image

If you need drivers (read framed), add, if you don’t need just click on Next.

image

On the next screen enter destination machine information.

image

I decided to join Nano Server to the domain.

image

On the next screen we need to set network.

image

Please read all chosen settings and if you are OK with that click on Create.

image

We need to wait some time for the image creation. In my case that was less then three minutes.

And viola, are Nano Server image created through Nano Server Image Builder is ready to use.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, this is the last blog post for this year. Wish you all the best in New Year 2017. Be happy and fat Smiješak

Rename a Nano Server

Hi to everyone,

In this blog post I’d like to explain how to add new name to your Nano Server. Why I would like to do that? Because, when you create Nano Server image from the Nano Server Image Builder, during the setup process you need to enter the name of the Nano Server, also if you want to create few of Nano Servers, you will have the same name on the every machine what’s not good, right?
As you can see from the picture below, the recovery console doesn’t have an option to rename the hostname.

Nano

The only way to rename Nano Server is using PowerShell Remote Session or PowerShell Direct from the Hyper-V host.
In this case I’ll use PowerShell Direct, and as you can see on the picture below I haven’t network adapter on the Nano Server because I have one Nano Server on my network with the same host name and want to avoid collision.

Nano2
Open PowerShell in elevated mode and type:

Enter-PSSession –VMName “nano server name” –Credentials administrator
Where “nano server name” is the name of your Nano Server.

image

Rename-Computer –NewName “New Name” –PassThru
Where “New Name” is the name of your Nano Server.

image

image

After you are done, logon to your renamed Nano Server, enable network adapter and enjoy the day. Smiješak

IT conferences season 2016 is over

Hi there,

I’m done with IT conferences for this year Smiješak s namigivanjem. After the Spring tour I took a break from the IT conferences and then after the summer, started again Smiješak. So, now it’s time to take a longer break during the winter!
Here is a short overview where I was a speaker and participant during the last couple of months.

[Autumn tour]
image

One of the best IT conference in our region, Kulendayz. I had one day workshop and one session on the second conference day.

image

On September 19. I was a speaker at MSCommunity.ba conference in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. I had a session about Windows Containers!

image

The third IT conference in circle was MobilityDay conference organized by Citus where I had a session about “Private Datacenter”, of course, the main topic was Hyper-V Smiješak.

imageimage

After the MobilityDay I had a great session about Hyper-V Performance Tuning in Belgrade, Serbia on Sinergija IT conference.

image

I had the honor to spend few days with Ben Armstrong aka VirtualPCGuy, Hyper-V Principal Program Manager from Microsoft and to talk about great new technologies from the MS world.

image

As every year since 2010 there is a DevArena where I had a session about Docker and Windows Containers.

image

Week after we had Global MVP Summit in Redmond where we heard a lot of nice things about which we can’t talk Smiješak.

image

The last IT conference for this year was Advanced Techonology Days 12 [ATD]. This conference was organized by the Microsoft Croatia, where there were more than 500 participants.

So, these were all main IT conferences this fall Smiješak s namigivanjem. We have few IT Pro user group meetings until the end year and I call you to visit us in Microsoft Croatia office!

Until the next post.

Cheers,

Romeo
