Live Migration fails with hardware error

Today I migrated few of virtual machines from one Hyper-V host (Windows Server 2012) to another Hyper-V host (Windows Server 2012 R2) through Hyper-V Manager console and got “The virtual machine cannot be moved to the destination computer. The hardware on the destination computer is not compatible with the hardware requirements of this virtual machine.”
I checked Processor compatibility as well is it Live Migration enabled, but still nothing.

So, where the problem is? Mainly, problem is in a virtual network adapter name!
Honestly, message is a little vague.

What we can do in this case?
1. Rename one of the virtual switches to have a matching set between the source and destination Hyper-V hosts, but… what if have situation like this (This is my scenario)
On the first Hyper-V host (WS2012) I have vSwitches configured like in the picture below

On the second Hyper-V host (WS2012 R2) I’ve NIC Team with Converged network configured. See picture.

In this case isn’t that easy to rename vSwitches or to configure NIC Team on the first Hyper-V host and then to create Converged network etc.

What I did? Very simple, removed network adapter from the virtual machine then I did “Live Migration” from the first host to the second and then attached network adapter from the second host to the virtual machine.

Keep in mind that you will have downtime during migration because don’t have network connectivity on the VM.

The circle is closed (Hyper-V evangelism – Spring 2014)

Three conferences in three weeks ;) In the last three weeks I was a speaker on three different conferences, from Sabis IT Meeting (Abu Dhabi, UAE), WinDays 14 (Umag, Croatia) to MS NetWork 4 (Banja Vrućica, BiH) and I can’t tell you where was better :).
The first IT conference was in Abu Dhabi (29. & 30. 3.2014.) where I held two days Hyper-V training with my good fellow Charbel Nemnom for Sabis administrators from Gulf Region. One great and awesome experience for me. Thank you Charbel!

The second conference was the biggest Microsoft IT conference in our region, WinDays 14 from 7.-10.4.2014. I had one session, Hyper-V over SMB and one small part on a technology keynote where I mentioned few cool features in Windows Server 2012 R2 as well cool features in the Hyper-V role. Many thanks to great guys, Marin, Robert, Tipsi etc.

The third conference was MS NetWork 4, the biggest Microsoft IT conference in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I had session Hyper-V from H to V. Great conference with great people and lots of Bosnian humor :) Thank you all, especially to Damir Dizdarević and Enis Šahinović for a great moments.

For now it is enough conferences and let’s back to work.

Hyper-V Cluster for the Lab – Part 2

Hi there,

In the last blog post I wrote how to prepare Hyper-V Cluster (Network, Storage Spaces, vDisks, CSV etc.). In this blog post I’ll explain how to move virtual machine storage and how to make virtual machine highly available.

The scenario is as follows;

I have one virtual machine on the local storage and now want to move virtual machine storage and all of the virtual machine data to a single location. In this case that will be on a CSV.

As you can see in the picture below VM and all her data files are on the local storage

1

Now I’ll move all that data files to another location C:\ClusterStorage\VMs
Right click on the virtual machine and choose Move and just follow the pictures below.

As you can see virtual machine is moved to another location and now it is ready to be highly available.

Open Failover Cluster Manager console and choose option Configure Role. Follow the steps below ;)

After a few moments virtual machine is highly available!

At the end we have clustered, highly available virtual machine.

This is all for today. Enjoy the day :)
